This hoodie chronicles a lesser-known chapter of Palestinian history: the story of its currency and the struggle for economic sovereignty.

The Story Behind the Design

Before the British Mandate, Ottoman currency was the standard in Palestine. In 1918, British authorities banned Turkish currency and forced the use of the Egyptian pound. Nine years later, in 1927, the Mandate government issued the Palestinian pound for the first time, printed in Arabic, English, and Hebrew. The move sparked widespread opposition among Palestinians, igniting what became known as the Currency Protests.

The Palestinian pound's life was short. After the 1948 Nakba, it was discontinued, and 130 million pounds held in British central banks were confiscated, never to be returned.

The design reflects this history while looking toward the future. It incorporates symbols deeply tied to Palestinian identity: oranges, olive trees, olive branches, and "Al-Quds" (Jerusalem). At its heart is the idea of a coin that remains "faceless and nameless until Palestine is free"—a placeholder for a currency that belongs to a free people.
